Savoy Dichroic Glass
Savoy Studios, located in Portland, Oregon, next to the Uroboros glass factory, have their own hot glass studio where they do their own water jet cutting and have a dichroic coating chamber. They produce dichroic in limited quantities for sale. Savoy patterns are etched onto COE90 Uroboros thin clear and black base coated in their own Rainbow configuration. The Savoy Rainbow is a "target" pattern, not stripes like a standard rainbow. 75-80% of the center of the sheet is copper to gold, with the corners and outer edges being green/blue/purple rings. Availability of cool colors is limited. Rarely, a sheet with a red center to the target pattern is available, so reds are also in limited supply. As the entire 16" x 20" inch stock sheet is used, with no scrap edges, some 4" x 4"'s will have a clip mark on one edge. A typical stock sheet of Savoy patterned dichroic is shown here. The majority of the 4" x 4"'s from each stock sheet classify as "warm" colors coming from the center of the sheet, and outer "cool" colors are harder to come by. (Please reference the sheet shown.) Important information about Savoy dichroic glass. Savoy stock sheets are hand-cut sheets to 16" x 20". They are not always a full 16" x 20" square, so you may occasionally get a piece of Savoy that measures slightly under 4 inches, or has a clip mark on one side. We have established an allowable tolerance of 3-7/8". The Savoy patterns are created by an etching process done after the sheet is coated, whereas CBS Patterns are created in the coating chamber. A resist is applied to the glass which, being hand rolled, is not perfectly smooth. Tiny flaws or missing pattern areas where a bump or crease occurs on the surface of the glass can occur. While rare, these are unavoidable, and are not considered defects, just the nature of the hand made medium involved. Usually it is easy to work around these slight limitations, and we think you will find the unique Savoy patterns to be a valuable addition to your dichroic glass palette. |
